AAJUG meeting on Java Expert System Shell (JESS) tonight, March 24

The Ann Arbor Java User Group meeting is tonight, Tuesday, March 24, from 6:39-9:30 pm.  Jason Morris will be speaking on an "Introduction to the Java Expert System Shell (JESS).  The meeting is held at

Washtenaw Community College, WCC BE250

Presentation Title:
Introduction to the Java Expert System Shell (JESS)

Summary:
Sandia National Laboratory's Jess is a rule engine implemented in Java and based on the Rete pattern-matching algorithm.  The entire Jess distribution consists of the Jess API, a LISP-like scripting language (also called Jess), and an integrated development environment called the JessDE which is an Eclipse plugin.  Any Java developers who write complex business logic will benefit from this talk.  Business rules will be mentioned, but not glorified as the canonical example of Jess's abilities.

If you want to learn how to add powerful reasoning capability to your Java applications, then this talk is for you.

Keywords:  artificial intelligence, CLIPS, expert systems, inferencing, knowledge engineering, knowledge-base, LISP, rules, rule engine, rulebases

Will it be SWT or Google Analytics on Tuesday? Or Both?

Tuesday, May 1 Ann Arbor Technical Meetings

It's the first week of the month, and so the Ann Arbor area is hopping with user group meetings.   I already mentioned the AACS meeting (Ruby on Rails), but there are also meetings on Eclipse for SWT Development and Google Analytics at the ITZone.  The Python User Group meeting, which would typically take place on Thursday May 3, is postponed until May 16, for a special event with Stephan Diehl (who will talk about stackless python and pypy).

So here are the meeting announcements for each of the Tuesday night talks.  I guess if you're resourceful, you could attend both, since the Google analytics talk goes until 7 and the Eclipse talk doesn't start until after the open networking at 7 (so probably 7:30)!

Live isn’t always best

Getting Spoiled by Podcasts?

Did I mention that I REALLY liked the talk that I went to on Tuesday night, by Owen Taylor from Gigaspaces, for the Ann Arbor Java User Group? Yeah, I guess I did. Anyhow, as I was sitting there, in the talk, I was thinking what a GREAT podcast it would have made, and how I wished that the talk had been recorded so that I could listen to selected parts again but mainly so that I could share it with a few other people who I knew would be interested (but weren’t in attendance). Sheesh, who would have thought that I would PREFER a podcast to a live meeting? OK, I can’t go that far. It was definitely better, in person, where I could see what was going on and eat pizza and have a chance to win an IPod (still bummed about not winning that). But it definitely occurred to me that it would have been great to have had a recording in addition to the live presentation. And, with 2 small children at home, I can listen to WAY more podcasts than attend live meetings. Funny how technology sometimes changes our perspective a bit …
